Luxa SMTP — Installation & License Setup Guide
This guide covers installing Luxa SMTP (Free), installing Luxa SMTP Pro, and activating your Pro license. For day-to-day use of the plugin’s features once everything is set up, see the User Guide.
1. Requirements
- WordPress 6.2 or later
- PHP 7.4 or later
- SMTP credentials from your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES, or any other SMTP server)
Luxa SMTP Pro additionally requires the free Luxa SMTP plugin to be installed and active — Pro is an add-on, not a standalone plugin. If Free isn’t active, Pro will show an admin notice and won’t do anything until it is.
2. Installing Luxa SMTP (Free)
Option A — from your WordPress dashboard (recommended):
- Go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for “Luxa SMTP”.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
Option B — manual upload:
- Download the plugin zip file.
- Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Choose the zip file and click Install Now.
- Click Activate.
Once active, a new Luxa SMTP menu item appears in your wp-admin sidebar. Head to Luxa SMTP → Settings to configure your SMTP connection — see the User Guide for that part.
3. Installing Luxa SMTP Pro
- Purchase a license at https://luxapress.com/wordpress-plugins/luxa-smtp — you’ll receive a download link and a license key by email.
- Download the Pro plugin zip from that link.
- In your site’s wp-admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
- Choose the zip file, click Install Now, then Activate.
If the free Luxa SMTP plugin isn’t active yet, you’ll see a notice asking you to install/activate it first — do that, then Pro will start working normally.
4. Activating your license
- Go to Luxa SMTP → Settings, and open the License tab (it appears automatically once Pro is installed).
- Enter your License Key exactly as it was emailed to you.
- Email is optional — fill it in if you’d like it associated with the activation record.
- Click Activate.
Once activated, you’ll see:
- A Backup Connection, Failure Alerts, Resend From Log, Export CSV/XLSX, and Weekly Report tab, each ready to configure.
- A small PRO badge next to “Luxa SMTP” in your wp-admin sidebar menu.
- A richer dashboard-style admin layout in place of the plain default one (this is purely cosmetic — every Free feature works identically either way).
If activation fails
The Activate button will show one of these messages if something’s wrong:
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “This license key is not valid.” | The key doesn’t exist, or was typed/pasted incorrectly | Double-check for typos or a stray space, and re-copy it from your purchase email |
| “This license has expired. Please renew it.” | The license itself has expired (not just support/updates — see §6) | Renew at luxapress.com |
| “This license is no longer active.” | The key was disabled, refunded, or cancelled | Contact support if you believe this is a mistake |
| “This license is already active on these domains: …” | You’ve used up every activation slot this license allows | See §5 below — you can free up a slot yourself |
5. Moving a license to a new domain / freeing up a slot
Each license allows a limited number of active domains at once (see your purchase confirmation for the exact number). If you try to activate on a new site and get the “already active on these domains” message, the License tab shows every domain currently using the key, each with a Deactivate this domain button right next to it.
- Click Deactivate this domain next to whichever old/unused site you want to free up (e.g. an abandoned staging site, or a domain you migrated away from).
- Confirm the prompt.
- Try Activate again on the new site — it should succeed now.
This works without needing to log in to the old site at all — you’re freeing the slot from wherever you’re currently trying to activate.
Deactivating on purpose (planned migration)
If you’re intentionally moving a license from Site A to Site B:
- On Site A, go to Luxa SMTP → Settings → License, and click Deactivate on this domain.
- On Site B, activate the same key normally.
This is the cleaner path when you have access to the old site — no need to wait for an activation-limit error.
6. Checking license status / “Support & Updates” vs. license validity
The License tab (once activated) shows:
- License Key — masked, for your own confirmation.
- Domains — how many of your allowed activations are currently in use (e.g. “2 of 3 used”).
- Expires — when the license itself expires. If this is blank, the license is a lifetime purchase and never expires.
- Support & Updates — a separate date from the license expiry. This only tells you how long you’ll keep receiving plugin updates and support; it never disables the plugin. If support has expired but the license itself is still active, every Pro feature keeps working exactly as before — you simply won’t get new version updates until you renew.
Click Check License Now any time to re-verify immediately, instead of waiting for the plugin’s automatic daily background check.
If the license server is briefly unreachable (a network hiccup, a maintenance window), Luxa SMTP Pro is built to fail safe: it never disables your license just because it couldn’t reach the server for a moment. Only a definitive “no” from the server (an invalid or expired key) ever turns Pro off.
7. Uninstalling Pro
Pro’s own license state (key, status, cached data) is always removed when you uninstall Pro — a license key has no further use once the plugin is gone. Settings for individual add-ons (Backup Connection, Failure Alerts, etc.) live inside the free plugin’s own settings and are left untouched, governed entirely by Free’s own “Delete data on uninstall” option — so reinstalling Pro later (e.g. after a lapsed renewal) restores your add-on configuration automatically.
